Of Freedom, Dame Maggie and knowing that leggings are the work of Satan

This week marks the one month anniversary since I retired - it feels both possible and impossible that one month has passed.  Lesson #1: I may be turning into Dame Maggie I am learning that I don't have to do everything all at once, I am definitely slowing my pace - which is a good thing. The days blend into one and I find I'm doing  the Senior Moment narrative of "what day is it"? From looking at a calendar/diary eleventy-two times a day to ensure I was where I should be at any given moment, I now find I forget to look and have had a couple of near misses with family birthdays - but caught them just in time- phew! I find I am becoming a bit Dame Maggie in Downton Abbey - "what is a weekend?" https://youtu.be/zhfpBW-nUWk Lesson #2: Once an OT always an OT/Never too old to learn new skills  I thought I would be a "lady who lunches" that I would be spending time visiting family in Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and Fra...

It's a strange thing that happens when you try to expand and develop your horizons. From the seed of a good idea you strive to learn more about it (whatever "it" is) and begin to apply your learning to given situations/new developments etc. You gain a level of confidence with this new thing - and then you jump into a larger pool (I guess your horizon expands!) and you realise how little you actually know about it - and it starts all over again. I know this is not particularly earth shattering news to anyone - but it perhaps mirrors my current state of mind. What I'd like to know is: A)Where do you find the energy from to carry horizon scanning on and b) how do you get over the feeling that one day you'll get caught out and someone will find out what little substance lies behind the facade?? Just a thought for today!

Whilst sitting alone, working from home it is not easy to just reach out to someone to say "do you remember when..." or "did I ever tell you...." and I am finding that I am needing to do that more and more as the transition process into retirement picks up a pace. So, dear readers of my blog - you are my sounding board and my validation. Thank you, I hope the next few posts are not too self-indulgent. As a 6th former (very Mallory Towers!) 1979/80 we were encouraged to take some work experience and for reasons I can't remember I chose to go to an occupational therapist working in Social Services - a Mrs Brown (yes...the first name culture hadn't reached a rural market town in Lincolnshire by then). I must have enjoyed it - the only memory I have is turning up with equipment to someone's home to be told that the patient had passed away - I think from that I understood empathy, the importance of good communication and the value of timely intervention - a...
